Make sure its tied securely around the hair.

Total time in hair prep with the smoothing technique:
35 minutes and you're out the door!
Malanei
Just a pea size amount will work to stretch, elongate the curl pattern and hold down the hair.
Malanei
This method is certainly not fool-proof. After much trial and error with procedure and products, I finally found a way to mane tame a simple protective style during an extended stretch.
So can you.
Malanei
Hair is flatter and smoother in appearance from all sides!
Malanei
A little make-up does wonders!
Malanei
After 15 minutes hair is dry. It's time to remove the scarf, and check out the smooth results.

Tie on a scarf, headband, or head wrap, securely to set the hair while it finishes drying.
Malanei
While waiting for the hair to dry (15 minutes) I will continue to get ready, and apply a little make-up.
Malanei
Once the hair is about 50% dry, gently gloss on a few drops of heavy oil or gel (like castor oil) to the edges around your hairline.
Malanei
Last, use your comb and brush as your finishing tools only, and use them sparingly.
Malanei
Two or three gentle brush strokes along the roots before tying down the hair with a scarf.
Malanei
Clip your damp hair back for a few minutes so it can continue to air dry.
Malanei
Time to seal the ends with your favorite oil. I use a few drops of coconut oil massaged into the hair ends.
Malanei
The hair is now dampened and moisturized. Begin to smooth the hair in the direction of the finished style, using your hands and fingers like a comb.
Malanei
Using a tried and true smoothing technique has helped to achieve sleeker styles.
Malanei
Give special attention to problem areas where the new growth might be curlier, tighter, or dryer. The crown area tends to be the poofiest.
Malanei
Top the hair with a small amount of your favorite cream, serum or gel that is heavier than your moisturizer.
I use alba botanica unpetroleum jelly. Rub it between palms before applying.
Malanei
Apply your favorite water- based moisturizer or leave -in conditioner to your damp hair in 4 sections.
Malanei
I use alba botanica leave-in cream conditioner.
Malanei
Divide the hair into 4 sections. Dampen each section with a light spray of (distilled) water.
Malanei
Start by detangling on dry hair in small sections with fingers, and smoothing with hands. Focus on the root section first.
Malanei
For this smoothing technique you will need:
Spray bottle of water
Moisturizer cream or gel
light oil
Castor oil for edges
scarf
comb/brush
hair pins
clip

Maintaining a presentable style from day to day can be challenging as the new growth comes in.
Malanei
I currently have three and a half inches of new growth and two different textures of hair. My 4a/b hair has not seen a relaxer in 7 months.
