A real treat, Jim. This is the place we took the kids to with my elderly aunt, too many years ago, when we visited from BC.

Hi J,
A lovely walk ive done so mny times. wish it was sunny again, Dream on, thanks j, that was lovely. k
Jim
..this was the schoolhouse with its cobbled yard - Sh! Listen, can you hear the laughter of the children as they play?..almost..
Jim
..and this is the chapel memorial cross with its inscription..
Jim
.. It says, Old Douglas Chapel for four full centuries loved and thronged by those who worshipped God from all the country around. - its artifacts are in Parbold Church on Parbold Hill..
Jim
The skeleton of a dead tree, is bleached against the green.
Jim
Here is bench dedicated to Dino a dog that died along with his master who enjoyed many happy walks together along here.
Jim
Last flowers of summer soon the frost will kill them off.
Jim
..but for now to be enjoyed.
Jim
All is quiet as you walk - only the occasional passing of a Southport - Manchester train breaks the silence.
Jim
A couple enjoy a stroll together - deep in conversation.
Jim
Its nice to walk with only your thoughts and the beauty of the trees turning colour.
Jim
Now we are at bridge No.40 where we cross the canal and start the climb back up to the Wiggin Tree.
Jim
Hard to believe this bridge like all the others has been here for over 200 years when the canal was first cut.
Jim
Over the bridge a wide lane invites us on.
Jim
Narrowing as we climb.
Jim
To the side we glimpse the lawns of a nice house - and wonder "Who lives in a house like this?"
Jim
Now we pass the remains of a long disused iron stile - pitted and red with rust it is still so sturdy it will last for another hundred years
Jim
The path pulls us on and upward.
Jim
Its a long haul up to the main road - but worth it - and you can always stop and admire the view....
Jim
..overlooking Wigan - unjustly maligned by people who have never been there, but is in fact surrounded by lovely countryside just a few minutes from it's centre.
Jim
. Pheww! At last we pop out of the path from the canal on to the layby opposite the Wiggin Tree - now! shall we drive away - or enjoy a drink or an ice cream before setting off? Mmmm! Choices, choices
Jim
Here the canal is narrowed by a reedbed.
Jim
These markers told the old bargees ...
Jim
..were they were.
Jim
A reed bed
Jim
This bridge is by Chapel Green - once a chapel and school house that served this rural community for 400 years.
Jim
..the schoolhouse is now a private home, this is what you see as you pass by on the towpath..
Jim
..and the chapel is long gone - but out of sight a cross tells its story. Let's turn right under the bridge and take a peep..
Jim
This chapel and school served people of the farms and houses across the local countryside.
Jim
..back on the canal a modern day pleasure cruiser approaches..
Jim
.. leaving turmoil in its wake.
Jim
The tower of Parbold Church is on the road you walked down from the Wiggin Tree to start the walk.
Jim
..and to your right is Ashurst Beacon on its hill opposite, one of a chain of beacons across England that were lit to warn of the Spanish Armada.
Jim
An anglers warning sign..
Jim
..some have been electrocuted when their tall poles catch overhead power lines like these.
Jim
This walk starts at the Wiggin Tree at the top of Parbold Hill. You set off down the road to the canal bridge and turn left onto the canal towpath
Jim
Immediately this is what you see..
Jim
..a beautifull weeping willow..
Jim
..here shading a canal narrowboat.
Jim
..in the background is the road bridge where you joined the canal.
Jim
Along this part, back gardens reach to the canal's edge.
Jim
Now Autumn colours are starting to show.
