ianmclean An Aboriginal Dreaming story, retold by Stage 1 students
ianmclean Whale knew lots of animals but he only had one friend: a starfish.
1/2H @ Penrith PS Dear 1G, We liked your digital story. We really liked when Whale kept saying "No" to all the animals, and when he had a fight with Starfish, and when he swam over the sunken boat without knowing it was beneath him.
ianmclean Whale had the one canoe big enough for all the animals to fit into.
ianmclean The animals decided to ask Whale about the canoe.
Helen Boelens What a wonderful story. I love the way the children have told it to us!
2B, Penrith PS Well done 1G. We liked your show, especially when Whale didn't notice his old canoe was right underneath him.
ianmclean How the whale got a hole in his head...
ianmclean Long ago, in the Dreaming, all the animals lived across the water.
ianmclean Koala asked, "May we borrow your canoe, please?" "No," said Whale, "because you might sink it."
ianmclean Little Emu asked, "May we PLEASE borrow your canoe?" "No," said Whale, "because you might break the paddles."
ianmclean Brolga asked, "May we borrow your canoe, please?" "No," said Whale, "because YOU might make a hole in it."
ianmclean The animals told Starfish to keep Whale busy while they stole the canoe.
ianmclean "You have lots of barnacles on your skin. Let me help you to remove the mulas."
ianmclean "Quick! Whale has fallen asleep in the sun!"
ianmclean The animals climbed into Whale's canoe.
ianmclean Koala had the strongest arms, so he rowed with the paddles.
ianmclean Whale woke up. "Starfish, you tricked me!"
ianmclean Whale and Starfish had a fight.
ianmclean Starfish poked a hole in Whale's head!
ianmclean Whale tossed Starfish into a rock pool. He is still there today.
ianmclean Brolga used his long legs to kick a hole in the canoe.
ianmclean The boat turned to stone and can still be seen off the beach at Port Kembla.
ianmclean Whale spouted water out of the hole in his head.
ianmclean He is still swimming up and down the coast of Australia, looking for his lost canoe. THE END.
ianmclean This digital story was retold from the Aboriginal Dreaming story, "How the whale got a hole in his head" as related by Beryl Timbery Beller, a Dharawal Elder. We are students from 1G at Penrith Public School, 2012.
